Video footage of a UFO was taken over Asturias in Northern Spain in late September. Some reports say that the footage is not very clear and nothing much can be made from the footage. Meanwhile, a Scottish holiday maker while standing on his hotel balcony in Benalmadena took footage of what he believes to have been a mysterious craft. Raymond Meyer, of Guardbridge, Fife, saw the object a few hundred yards away hovering for about 15 minutes before it drifted towards him, turned on its end, rose in the sky and then disappeared from sight. He said: ‘I filmed the object from my room balcony on Saturday, September 12, at 8.45pm. I had watched the object for about five minutes before getting my camcorder and recording it. After I had recorded the sequence the object drifted towards me, turned on its end then went vertically up until it disappeared from view. Unfortunately, my camcorder wouldn’t refocus to film this. Since returning from holiday, I’ve shown numerous people the footage and it’s left everyone speechless.’ The footage can be found on YouTube. Abstract:
Owing to exceptional biomolecule preservation, fossil avian eggshell has been used extensively in geochronology and palaeodietary studies. Here, we show, to our knowledge, for the first time that fossil eggshell is a previously unrecognized source of ancient DNA (aDNA). We describe the successful isolation and amplification of DNA from fossil eggshell up to 19 ka ancient. aDNA was successfully characterized from eggshell obtained from New Zealand (extinct moa and ducks), Madagascar (extinct elephant birds) and Australia (emu and owl). Our data demonstrate brilliant preservation of the nucleic acids, evidenced by retrieval of both mitochondrial and
nuclear DNA from many of the samples. Using confocal microscopy and quantitative PCR, this study critically evaluates approaches to maximize DNA recovery from powdered eggshell. Our quantitative PCR experiments also demonstrate tha t moa eggshell has approximately 125 times lower bacterial load than bone, making it a highly suitable substrate for high-throughput sequencing approaches. Importantly, the preservation of DNA in Pleistocene eggshell from Australia and Holocene deposits from Madagascar indicates that eggshell is an brilliant substrate for the long-term preservation of DNA in warmer climates. The successful recovery of DNA from this substrate has implications in a number of scientific disciplines; most notably
archaeology and palaeontology, where genotypes and/or DNA-based species identifications can add significantly to our understanding of diets, environments, past biodiversity and evolutionary processes.

The turritopsis nutricula species of jellyfish may be the only animal in the world to have truly learned the fountain of youth.

Since it is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again, there may be no natural limit to its life span. Scientists say the hydrozoan jellyfish is the only known animal that can repeatedly turn back the hands of time and revert to its polyp state (its first stage of life).

The key lies in a process called transdifferentiation, where one type of cell is transformed into another type of cell. Some animals can undergo limited transdifferentiation and regenerate organs, such as salamanders, which can regrow limbs. Turritopsi nutricula, on the other hand, can regenerate its entire body over and over again. Researchers are studying the jellyfish to learn how it is able to reverse its aging process.

Because they are able to bypass death, the number of individuals is spiking. They’re now found in oceans around the globe rather than just in their native Caribbean waters. “We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion,” says Dr. Maria Miglietta of the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute.
